was inspired by morning skies.. not that i know anything of sunrises *guilty pleasures*
the thing about free is that its like super intense and kind of uncomfortably realistic?? like in haikyuu is just “VOLLEYBALL VOLLEYBALL VOLLEYBALL ONLY VOLLEYBALL FOREVER” and big windup is like “baseball! and friendship!! friendship and baseball!!!” but free is like “THINK ABOUT YOUR FUTURE. WHERE ARE YOU GOING IN LIFE. SOUSUKE IS IN SERIOUS PAIN AND MAY NOT SWIM AGAIN. RINS DAD IS DEAD”
OK HOLD UP, I GET YOUR ARGUMENT
but i disagree that haikyuu is just “VOLLEYBALL VOLLEYBALL VOLLEYBALL ONLY VOLLEYBALL FOREVER” - perhaps kageyama or hinata would think so since theyre a bunch of volleyball idiots, but literally why i loved haikyuu is because of the down-to-earthness and realistic aspect of it
just compare it to a mainstream sports anime. where have you seen one where the side characters get character development and even an entire chapter all dedicated to themselves? a sports team that is ACTUALLY a team and not just relying on a “super talented first year”. there are so many sports stories about underdogs but karasuno is literally “neither strong nor weak” and it makes a lot of sense when you know that they were once on top but now they arent. and instead of one of the main characters having miraculously created a new technique while under stress to beat the opponent much more skilled than them AND SUCCESSFULLY EXECUTED it even though they literally pulled it out of their asses a few seconds ago - in hq, we can actually see the character bust their asses to practice and ACTUALLY use their brains and make techniques for better team play (like that syncro play was awesome) AND NOT TO MENTION we actually get to see them doing trial and error. a good example would be yamaguchi’s floating serve where he fucking failed it not only on the first try in an official match but on the next ones too because he was afraid. and realistically speaking, who wouldnt in his situation. his only weapon was his serve and he wasnt even on par in terms of skills to the rest of his team mates. he wasnt just a server, he was a pinch server where his one sole job is to change the tide of the game into their favour. if this was your typical sports manga, he would have been given a heroic montage about his harsh practice and then a dramatic pause before his eventually successful serve ending with a bang - but no, yamaguchi did what most of us probably will, which is to succumb to the pressure and opt for the safer way out.
as much as i do love free as well, i will defend any misunderstanding against haikyuu. if you think it is just a volleyball anime, i dont think we are watching the same show.
